The fatal attraction of temporal power
By Gaither Stewart
Religious leaders cant resist it. They simply love
temporal power. Since the pharaohs built their pyramids to commemorate their
divinity, religious leaders attraction to earthly power has seemed
irresistible. To be God or his direct representative among men and to exercise
temporal power has attracted religious leaders since time immemorial.

The latest ex-gay ruse: Junk science at its worst
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
It was called the Thomas Project. When its principal
investigators -- Stanton Jones of Wheaton College and Mark Yarhouse of Pat
Robertson University -- published Ex-Gays?
A Longitudinal Study of Religiously Mediated Change in Sexual Orientation
(InterVarsity Press, 2007), the Christianist
Right hailed the
study as scientific proof sexual orientation can be changed:

Eternity with Jesus -- at your front door today
By Nick Paccione
Fundamentalist Christians often accuse liberals
of corrupting society with unscrupulous morality and progressive views on
sexuality. Conservative wars without justification and out-of-control
money-grubbing apparently arent big concerns. Most laughably, religious
conservatives worry endlessly that gays are planning to recruit their children.

Hellfire and the Puritan premise
By David Heleniak
Beginning in 1740, a religious revival movement led by
Jonathan Edwards spread through New England. This movement, the Great
Awakening, was, according to Perry Miller (Errand Into the
Wilderness, 13th ed.), dismissed by the religious establishment
as mere "enthusiasm," an "excitement of overstimulated
passions" (p. 154). It was, in fact, reflective of Puritan culture as a
whole.

Damning and burning books, a theofascist tradition
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
The Dominionist
Christian Right has been damning Harry Potter since the first book appeared.
Rabid evangelicals have staged literary autos

Religious Wars: The 2007 Edition
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
The infallible pope declared all non-Catholic
churches inherently false or, at best, defective if they didnt accept papal
authority. A few days later, Bible-waving fundamentalists screeched, Lord
Jesus, protect us from this abomination, when Rajan Zed, a Hindu chaplain from
Reno, Nevada, offered a serene invocation to open a session of the United
States Senate.

Christian Rights addiction to porn blamed on technology
By Frank J Ranelli
The Religious Rights
newest adversary of evangelicalism and outward disdain for pornography may have
less to do with their distaste for it and more to do with the fact it is maxing
out their credit cards.

Hurting people for God and profit: The ex-gay scam exposed, yet again
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
The dangerous scam of ex-gay therapies has been
exposed time and time again. The San
Francisco Chronicle did so in a March 2003 article.

Beware the Dominionist "love bomb"
By Kerry
Tomasi
During a recent address to the Good Shepherd Baptists
in Terre Haute Indiana, Col. J. Tyler Ryberg had this to say about our
"war on terror", and its current focal point, Iraq: " . . . it's an act of love to kill
evil people who seek to kill Americans, it's an act of love for our
nation". And with regards to those "Islamic
jihadists" in Iraq seeking to kill us: "Peace is not an option."

Just in case you missed these headlines . . .
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
Survey
finds evangelicals addiction to Internet porn on the rise. That June 7
headline exposed what many of those holier-than-thou evangelical Christians are
doing when theyre not beating their Bibles: A new survey shows that five of
ten Christian men in the U.S. -- and two of ten Christian women -- are addicted
to pornography. The survey was conducted by ChristiaNet.com, an online
Christian Internet community.

The goals of the Creation Museum: degut education and science, create a theofascist state
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
Bill Maher drew fire
when he said
that Christian fundamentalists (and other religious zealots) suffer from a
neurological disorder that stops [them] from thinking. He was right, sort
of. Religious fundamentalism may not, strictly speaking, be a neurological
disorder. But it certainly is a pathology that prevents rational thinking and
leads to the advocacy of ignorance, stupidity and hate.

The New Crusaders: Destroying America for Christ
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
In the hands of fanatics with a radical
socio-political agenda, there is no more lethal weapon than religion. History

history is again repeating itself as the leaders of the Christian Right muster
their well financed organizations to work toward their ultimate socio-political

As George Santayana noted,
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. From

Iran: The religious rights new bugbear
By Bill Berkowitz
As the launching of the Iraq War marked its fourth
anniversary on March 19, it is worth remembering that during the lead up to the
invasion a number of conservative evangelicals voiced their support for the
war: Richard Land, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission for
the Southern Baptist Convention, the nations largest Protestant denomination,
maintained that Bushs action met criteria for a just war; the National
Association of Evangelicals, which represents several dozen denominations
encompassing more than 30 million American evangelical Christians, openly
supported the war; Mike Evans, who heads the aggressively pro-Israeli Jerusalem
Prayer Team, pointed out that war with Iraq could be a dress rehearsal for
Armageddon, the fulfillment of biblical prophecy.
