The New York hotel maid accusing Dominique Strauss-Kahn was brutally assaulted, a friend and her lawyer say.

"There was nothing that took place in that hotel room which in any way could be construed as consensual. This woman was absolutely the victim of a physical and sexual assault," said her attorney, Jeffrey Shapiro.

He said the 32-year-old maid at the Times Square Sofitel Hotel is a devout Muslim immigrant from Guinea and the single mother of a 15-year-old daughter.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, head of the International Monetary Fund, is on suicide watch in the protective custody wing of Rikers Island after being denied bail.

He is accused of sodomy, forcing the maid to perform oral sex and submit to anal sex after he came out of his suite's bathroom naked on Saturday.

His attorney, Benjamin Brafman, has suggested that any encounter was consensual.

A close friend told ABC News the maid "was completely devastated."

He said she called him from the emergency room at St. Luke's hospital, where she was examined by doctors and questioned by detectives Saturday night.

"She didn't understand why he did such a thing," the friend said.

He said the maid is at a safe but undisclosed location.
