F-150 Trucks may be recalled due to a problem with leaking fuel tanks dragging along the road.
The LA Times reports that nine owners of the popular Ford model have reported the problem, and now safety regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are looking into the matter that spans over 2.7 million vehicles from model years 1997 to 2001.
Regulators explained to the newspaper that the steel straps
securing the fuel tank to the truck's body frame could deteriorate and break, resulting
in the tank leaning down or falling out onto the road.
No injuries have been reported due to the problem, however the NHTSA is aware of 306 individual complaints of rusted straps. In 243 cases, the fuel tank dropped or began dragging on the ground; while 95 cases involved actual fuel leakage. In two reports, the problem resulted in a fire, one of which destroyed the vehicle.
No recall has officially been announced, however it may be imminent.
