Personal data of 24.6 million Sony Online Entertainment accounts may have been stolen during a breach last month, company officials in San Diego said.

Sony Corp., based in Tokyo, said in a release Tuesday an investigation indicated hackers may have stolen the customer information April 16-17, as well as information from an outdated database, including 12,700 non-U.S. credit and debit card numbers and expiration dates and 10,700 direct debit records.

Faced with the outage of the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, Sony said it shut down all servers related to Sony Online Entertainment services while it reviews and upgrades its online security systems.

The company said it also was working with the FBI while conducting its own investigation and working to restore all services.
