China earthquake reports are coming in, and what we know as of Thursday morning in the United States is that a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Yunnan province in southwest China Thursday. Officials say the quake is responsible for killing at least 14 people and wounding 157 others.
The quake knocked down houses and disrupted electrical power, but telecommunications service was reported normal in the area near China's border with Myanmar, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
The epicenter of earthquake, about six miles deep, was in the village of Shiming, the China Earthquake Networks Center reported. Tremors could be felt in several adjacent counties, including Longchuan, Lianghe and Tengchong.
Three aftershocks shook the county within 10 minutes of the first jolt, Xinhua said.
The National Committee of Disaster Reduction and Ministry of Civil Affairs said they sent more than 8,000 tents, quilts, clothes and other materials to the region.
