Marisol Valles Garcia, the 20-year-old police chief of one of Mexico's most violent cities, has been fired for failing to show up for work, a city official said.
Garcia, who was also studying criminology, was head of the police force in Praxedis in the border state of Chihuahua, CNN reported Monday.
"Marisol did not show up for work this morning as she was expected," town secretary Andres Morales said. "Since she was on a personal leave that expired today and did not reach out to us over the weekend, she now faces termination. It is now an official matter. We don't know anything about her whereabouts. Our attempts to get a hold of her during the weekend were unsuccessful."
Praxedis Mayor Jose Luis Guerrero said last week Garcia was on personal leave to tend to her sick baby, but was expected to be back at work Monday.
CNN reported the abduction and killing of police officers in Praxedis to be common.
