Miami Dolphins head Coach Tony Sparano has been fired after the team stumbled to a 4-9 record this season, team owner Stephen Ross said Monday.
The move came after the Dolphins were humbled 26-10 by Philadelphia Sunday in Miami.
Sparano, who was in his fourth year as head coach, was let go after signing a two-year contract extension in January.
Taking over as interim head coach for the season's final three games will be secondary coach Todd Bowles.
"(Bowles) will be our new interim head coach and replace Tony Sparano, who has been a wonderful person and has done a wonderful job," Ross said. "It is with a lot of regret that I feel it is in the best interest of the Miami Dolphins to replace him at this time."
The Dolphins started the season with seven straight losses, then rebounded to win four of five before Sunday's setback.
Sparano guided Miami to a surprise AFC East championship in 2008, but the Dolphins went 7-9 in each of the next two seasons.
His firing was the second announced Monday. The Kansas City Chiefs released head Coach Todd Haley earlier in the day.
