The debut of .xxx Internet domains for adult material is raising debate among those opposed to adult entertainment and those who produce it, experts say.
Many conservative groups say creating a top-level domain for porn is tantamount to an endorsement of it.
"We are not in favor of the establishment of that domain," Patrick Vaughn, general counsel for the American Family Association, told Mashable Tuesday.
"It just creates more real estate for the pornography industry, and it doesn't exclude the sites that already exist. As this is, it just gives [pornographers] more to work with."
The ICM Registry, which polices the .xxx domains, said creating such a domain is better for those who don't like porn since it provides an easy way to filter out adult-entertainment sites.
However, some vendors of adult material object to the whole idea of a .xxx domain, arguing it relegates human sexuality to an Internet "ghetto."
And some people say the idea of moving all the Web's porn sites to one domain makes it that much easier for a government or third party to engage in censorship by simply pushing a button and making them all go away.
