A grizzly bear defending her cubs killed a man Wednesday in Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park, park rangers said.

A husband and wife had hiked a mile and a half up the Wapiti Lake trail south of the park's Canyon Village area when they surprised the mother and cubs, KXLH, Helena, Mont., reported.

The bear attacked and killed the man, while hikers nearby heard the woman's screams and called 911.

"It is extremely unfortunate that this couple's trip into the Yellowstone backcountry has ended in tragedy," Dan Wenk, superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, told the station. "Our heart goes out to the family and friends of the victim as they work to cope with their loss."

The victim's name was withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
