Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx is set to star as a freed slave in Quentin Tarantino's upcoming film, "Django Unchained."

Fox will play a freed slave who sets off on a mission to rescue his love Broomhilda from a sadistic owner with the help of a German bounty hunter, CNN reports.

"I think, just to be able to work with Quentin Tarantino and Samuel Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and to be able to tell a story that needs to be told," he told CNN of why he agreed to the role. "If you're a fan of 'Inglorious Basterds,' I mean, you know.. It's just amazing. It should be [an] amazing [thing]."

Leonardo DiCaprio will play plantation runner Calvin Candie, and Samuel L. Jackson is expected to play his right-hand man, Stephen, according to CNN. Christoph Waltz is set to play the bounty hunter, reports Variety. Kerry Washington is in talks to play Bromhilda.

Filming on 'Django Unchained' is likely to get underway within the next few months. According to Contact Music, Tarantino handed in the final draft of the script to The Weinstein Company on 26th April 2011.

Foxx was one of several actors up for the role, with 'Luther' star Idris Elba also thought to have been considered, Contact Music reports.

The actor recently wrapped up filming on the upcoming comedy 'The Skank Robbers', with Halle Berry and Martin Lawrence, according to Contact Music.

In 2004, Foxx won an Oscar for 'Best Actor' for his portrayal of the legendary pianist and singer Ray Charles.
