In Colorado, a 12-year-old boy was charged in a shooting that left both of his parents dead. The Colorado boy was described by friends as a wholesome kid who often volunteered at church. Prosecutors said the unnamed boy killed both of his parents, Charles and Marilyn Long, and critically wounded his two siblings.
The boy appeared before a judge Wednesday night and was ordered held without bond until his next court appearance in Burlington, reports CNN.
The boy was taken into custody Tuesday evening after he called 911 to report that at least three people had been shot in his home.
The boy made a emergency call about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, saying at least three people had been shot, but when responding officers arrived at the Burlington, Colo., home they found two people dead and two wounded, Colorado Bureau of Investigation Division Director Steve Johnson said Tuesday in a statement.
The dead were identified as the boy's parents, Charles Long, 50, and Marilyn Long, 51. The wounded victims, who were treated locally and flown to a Denver hospital, were identified as a 5 year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, Johnson said.
The two children were in critical condition, The Denver Post said.
The Longs had seven children with three of them grown and living on their own. The rest were being homeschooled, the Post said. The boy in custody was involved with activities at the Evangelical Free Church where the parents attended.
"He's the sweetest kid," said Pastor Ron Lee. "He is very helpful; he's got a very pleasant personality."
Marilyn Long was a homemaker and Charles Long was a patrol deputy sheriff for Kit Carson County, the Post said.
"He was a real good deputy," said Steve Goering, former Kit Carson Sheriff. "He was dedicated, he did a thorough job on anything he was given."
"I couldn't figure out how it could be him and his wife. I couldn't figure out how it could happen."
