9-11 widow wants deposition from Saddam
Louis Neil Mariani died when United Flight 175 crashed into the World Trade Center. His widow, Ellen, has refused compensation from the victims'fund, which would have terminated her right to sue anyone over her husband's death. She has retained Philip Berg, a former deputy attorney general of Pennsylvania, to file a civil RICO action against Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Rice, Tenet and others. RICO is the Rackeeter Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The suit alleges the defendants had foreknowledge of 9-11, failed to warn about or prevent the attacks, and there is an ongoing coverup of what really happened.
Berg says that with former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein now in U.S. custody, Mariani will seek an extraordinary writ to immediately depose Saddam as a critical witness support in of her action.
Berg is ready for the government argument that deposing Saddam for one person's civil suit would compromise national security:
"We're not looking for the information just for Ellen Mariani," said Philip Berg, in a telephone interview with this reporter. "We are standing in the shoes of every citizen in this country. We believe that over 80 percent of the people in this country know that the truth was not told to them about September 11th."
After Saddam;s capture was announced, George W. Bush said: "There needs to be a public trial and all the atrocities need to come out and justice needs to be delivered."
As usual, what Bush says about Saddam applies to himself.
