London police have notified families of people killed in the 2005 transport bombings that their phones may have been hacked, a victim's father said Tuesday.

Graham Foulkes, whose son, David, was one of 52 people killed July 7, 2005, said detectives told him his phone numbers and address were found in records seized in private investigator Glenn Mulcaire's office, The Guardian reported. Mulcaire was employed by News of the World, a tabloid owned by Rupert Murdoch's News International.

The newspaper reported Monday that Mulcaire hacked into a cellphone belonging to Milly Dowler, a schoolgirl abducted and killed in 2001, and deleted some saved messages. Her parents believed from the activity on her phone that she was still alive.

The parents of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, who were killed in 2002, have been told they were Mulcaire targets, the Guardian said.

Clifford Tibber, a solicitor who represents Foulkes and other families of victims of the 2005 bombings, said the notification was "a terrible shock."

The Metropolitan Police has set up Operation Weeting, a task force to deal with the hacking investigation. The News of the World has acknowledged making payments to police officers between 2003 and 2007.
