Words, money and anti-gay theopolitics
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
It never ceases to amaze me how the
sanctimonious leaders of the Christian Right twist language -- one might say
“lie” -- in order to advance their agendas and raise funds to finance their
“Christian” organizations’ goal of keeping gay and lesbian Americans and their
families social and legal outcasts.

No pagan trees for Christmas warriors
By Bill Berkowitz
Even though Tiger Woods’ indiscretions, the ins
and outs of health care reform, the climate change confab in Copenhagen, and
Uganda’s anti-homosexual death panels are all topics for discussion these days,
nothing tops the War on Christmas for some conservative Christian evangelical
groups.

Zionism’s un-Christian Bible
By Maidhc
Ó Cathail
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS)
campaign should widen its scope to target non-Israeli companies who contribute
significantly to the oppression of Palestinians. As part of this broader
strategy, priority should be given to one of the most egregious offenders, the
prestigious British publisher, Oxford University Press (OUP). As unlikely as it
may seem, the world’s largest university press is responsible for one of the
greatest obstacles to justice for Palestinians -- The Scofield Bible.

A matter of faith?
By Howard Lisnoff
Few religious issues have engendered such
controversy or national attention as Representative Patrick Kennedy’s (D-RI)
stand in defending abortion rights within the debate over national health care.
Thus far, however, federal funding of abortion under any health care
“compromise” between the House and Senate is a nonissue, as inclusion of any
federal funds for abortion was effectively halted when health care legislation
was passed by the House. So, though significant, Representative Kennedy’s
position, while noble, is academic.

God has left the building
By Sheila Samples
Several months ago, CNN published the results of
a couple of disturbing polls about Americans and their religious beliefs. The first
found that more Americans are rejecting religion and thus, according to CNN,
America is becoming “less Christian.” The second,
a Pew survey of only 742 mostly white evangelical Protestants, revealed that
more than six in 10 of them believe that torture is often or sometimes
justified.

The Catholic Church plays victim, again
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
Throughout its long history, the Roman Catholic
Church has time and time again proven itself to be one of the most dogmatic,
most powerful, and most corrupt institutions ever created. It claims to be
following in the footsteps of Jesus and preaching his message, but its leaders
have always lived in palatial splendor and are responsible for a 300-year “Holy
Inquisition” that resulted in the torture and murder of tens of thousands of
people.

Christian nationalism: The darkest side of religion

Christian nationalism. What is it? In her 2006
book Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism, Michelle Goldberg detailed the rise of this
theofascist movement.

Institutional Islamophobia and the politics of a minor’s choice
By Abukar Arman
Not since France’s banning of wearing the hijab
or Islamic headwear in schools has institutional Islamophobia unveiled its ugly
head under the spotlight of world attention. In Florida, political pressure has
caused the scale of justice to tilt.

Propagating fairy tales for power and profit
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
During the administration of George W. Bush,
religious fanatics had a friend in the White House. Things have changed a bit
in Washington, but those religious fanatics -- perhaps better described as
“theofascists” -- are still at it. However, in the changed context that’s a
good thing: it exposes their nonsensical twaddle even more overtly.

Do you believe in God? Yes or no?
By Jorge Majfud
Someone asks me whether I believe in God and
indicates that a one sentence answer will do. Two at the most. It’s easy: yes
or no.

Religious fundamentalism is a crime against humanity
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
No matter what the time period, no matter what
the culture, dogmatic religious fundamentalists have preached intolerance and
hate. They still do.

The “Christian” Right’s still wrong and singing the same old song: Part 2
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
When last we left the twisted logic of twisted
people, sci-fi writer Orson Scott Card seemed to be advocating the overthrow
of the U.S. government if gay American citizens were allowed to marry the
person they fell in love with and to whom they wish to commit their lives and
then, as most married couples, buy a house, pay their property taxes, and
becoming invested, contributing members of the community.

The “Christian” Right’s still wrong and singing the same old song: Part 1
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
You really have to wonder about the leaders of
the so-called “Christian”* Right and their political sycophants. They continue
to use the same hackneyed rhetoric, propagate the same bogus stereotypes, and
repeat the same outright lies. Perhaps they’re just, as Frank Rich suggested in
his New York Times OpEd, “brain
dead.”

More from the religious right
By Howard Lisnoff
The essays with a religious bent began in the
North during this academic year. Two community college students whom I worked
with were slavish in their constant references to God in their writing. One
student insisted on using Biblical references for papers that she completed for
an upper-level English course, while another student rationalized every bad
event that had happened in his life with a religious interpretation.

And they didn’t disappoint
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.
After the April 3 unanimous decision of the Iowa
Supreme Court striking down that state’s same-sex marriage ban, followed by the
Vermont legislature’s overriding the governor’s veto of that state’s marriage
equality legislation, it was just a matter of time until the Religious Right
and their minions vomited their same old vile bile. And they didn’t disappoint.

The same old Religious Right, with a few new tricks: Part 2
By Mel
Seesholtz, Ph.D.
They’re
still at it. Same old tired arguments, same old blatant prejudice. Two events
in mid-February exemplified the Religious Right’s continuing attempts to wrong
gay Americans in any way possible, but all they’re really doing is flapping
their Chicken Little wings and exposing their unbridled bigotry.
