Religion
Do you believe in God? Yes or no?
By Jorge Majfud

Someone asks me whether I believe in God and indicates that a one sentence answer will do. Two at the most. It’s easy: yes or no.

Religious fundamentalism is a crime against humanity
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

No matter what the time period, no matter what the culture, dogmatic religious fundamentalists have preached intolerance and hate. They still do.

The “Christian” Right’s still wrong and singing the same old song: Part 2
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

When last we left the twisted logic of twisted people, sci-fi writer Orson Scott Card seemed to be advocating the overthrow of the U.S. government if gay American citizens were allowed to marry the person they fell in love with and to whom they wish to commit their lives and then, as most married couples, buy a house, pay their property taxes, and becoming invested, contributing members of the community.

The “Christian” Right’s still wrong and singing the same old song: Part 1
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

You really have to wonder about the leaders of the so-called “Christian”* Right and their political sycophants. They continue to use the same hackneyed rhetoric, propagate the same bogus stereotypes, and repeat the same outright lies. Perhaps they’re just, as Frank Rich suggested in his New York Times OpEd, “brain dead.”

I’m not against religion; I’m against religious hypocrisy
By Mary Shaw

From time to time I write articles and blog posts that are critical of religious hypocrisy.

Religion
More from the religious right
By Howard Lisnoff

The essays with a religious bent began in the North during this academic year. Two community college students whom I worked with were slavish in their constant references to God in their writing. One student insisted on using Biblical references for papers that she completed for an upper-level English course, while another student rationalized every bad event that had happened in his life with a religious interpretation.

Religion
And they didn’t disappoint
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

After the April 3 unanimous decision of the Iowa Supreme Court striking down that state’s same-sex marriage ban, followed by the Vermont legislature’s overriding the governor’s veto of that state’s marriage equality legislation, it was just a matter of time until the Religious Right and their minions vomited their same old vile bile. And they didn’t disappoint.

The Religious Right’s continuing anti-human campaigns -- Part 2
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

Through their Howdy Doody front man, George W. Bush, the Religious Right ruled America for eight years. George is out, but the Religious Right and their pocketed GOPers continue their illogical, anti-reality agenda.

Religion
The Religious Right’s continuing anti-human campaigns -- Part 1
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

In a recent interview, Michael Steele, the beleaguered new head of the GOP, acknowledged homosexuality is not a choice.

Religion
The same old Religious Right, with a few new tricks: Part 2
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

They’re still at it. Same old tired arguments, same old blatant prejudice. Two events in mid-February exemplified the Religious Right’s continuing attempts to wrong gay Americans in any way possible, but all they’re really doing is flapping their Chicken Little wings and exposing their unbridled bigotry.

Religion
The same old Religious Right, with a few new tricks: Part 1
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

Now that their “messianic” (emphasis on the “mess-”) president George W. Bush is out of office and President Obama is committed to civil equality for all Americans, the Religious Right is beside itself and furiously flapping its Chicken Little wings.

Veils and justice
By Faisal Kutty

Here they go again. Muslims just don’t give up trying to change our values and roll back hard fought rights of equality and justice. Though this time, we may have nipped it in the bud early -- but should we?

Part II: The 2008 Wholly Hypocrite of the Year Award goes to . . .
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

So many worthy candidates. But only one can win. But hail to the Wholly Hypocrite of the Year runners-up. Second runner-up: The Church of Jesus Christ and Later-day Saints. First runner-up: Pastor Rick Warren.

Part I: The 2008 Wholly Hypocrite of the Year Award goes to . . .
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

So many worthy candidates. There were, of course, the perennial nominees: James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Don Wildmon of the American Family Association, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, “Lucky Louie” Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition. But there were also some new contenders.

Vicious and viscous: The latest from the hysterical Christian Right
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

The Protestant Christian Right (and their allies) are wringing their collective hands and forecasting doom. Why? Because President-elect Barack Obama is including gay people in his administration and has vowed to work toward equality for all Americans.

More non sequitur arguments from the Christian Right’s dogma of duplicity
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

The “Yes on 8” campaign in California that, for the time being, succeeded in revoking some citizens’ basic civil right to a civil marriage used scare tactics and non sequitur arguments based on misrepresentations, distortions, and deceptions. And they’re still at it.

Political discourse in the US warped by religious extremists
By Howard Lisnoff

The ride down the western border of Massachusetts is serene in fall. The hills have turned from the vibrant red, yellow, and orange colors of the season to a more muted orange and brown. Scenic vistas, that were blocked by leaves only a few weeks ago, open up and reveal more distant and larger mountains in New York, and lakes and marshes, whose reeds have by now gone to winter brown. It’s an enjoyable way to end an afternoon working at the local community college helping students with their writing.

Religion
Distorting research, promoting hate, repeating history: business as usual for the American Family Association
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

Don Wildmon and his American Family Association are notorious for their anti-gay rhetoric and efforts to hurt, in any and every way possible, the families of gay and lesbian Americans.

Religion
Hallmark Cards to celebrate love and commitment expose bigotry and hate
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

The leaders of America’s Christianist Right have been whirling and twirling lately. First, the California Supreme Court ruled that banning same-sex marriage was discriminatory and, therefore, unconstitutional. Then the Court ruled unanimously that medical doctors could not use personal religious beliefs as ground for not treating gay and lesbian patients.

America’s religious fascists waging war on love, people and families: Part 3, California’s Proposition 8
By Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D.

Today, civil equality and marriage are the primary targets for America’s religious fascists. They were unsuccessful in overturning equality in Massachusetts, so California’s Proposition 8 ballot initiative is now their focus, especially since California has no residency requirement for people marrying in the state. Their greatest fear is that civil equality will spread, especially since Massachusetts has repealed the 1913 law banning out-of-state marriages.
